Giant Snails

What if extraterrestrials that visit (or attack?), will come in shape of something mankind knows from ancient times of planet earth? Something that changed its appearance during millions of years. Something we feel sorry about, after we noticed the crushing sound underneath our foot that steped on one of those poor creatures again.
Well, better don't try to step on those.
